How many people can your gym safely hold?

Maximum capacity calculations should form part of a Fire Safety Risk Assessment as a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and Building Regulations Approved Document B.

Some high profile incidents have occurred when businesses have allowed building occupation to exceed capacity and an incident has resulted in emergency exits not being sufficient to allow safe and timely egress, leading to injuries and fatalities.
Failure to calculate and comply (and be able to demonstrate compliance) with Fire Regulations and maximum capacities can result in business closure, fines, and prison sentences.

Maximum capacity will vary dependent on gym layout, whether for normal use, competition, seminar, etc and these scenarios should all be covered in your Fire Risk Assessment and Emergency Evacuation Procedures.

Calculations will depend on floor space, number, location and size of emergency exits, and a number of other factors.
