Do you have gym heating?

Gas heaters may seem like a good option, but there are a huge set of regulations and risks surrounding what you can and can’t do.

A quick search on social media has highlighted an extremely dangerous trend of using propane gas cylinders indoors to heat gyms – risking the leakage of harmful gases into an environment where people’s health can be seriously affected.

Not only is it dangerous to have these cylinders indoors, but using them to create a heat source close by is even riskier. This presents a very real danger of fire, explosion, serious injury and damage to property, not to mention numerous breaches in Health & Safety Law.

It is possible to use propane cylinders (as long as your lease and insurance allow it) but these must be stored outside, abide by a strict set of rules, and the system for use must be installed and signed off by a Gas Safe registered contractor. Connections should also be regularly checked for leaks and records of checks kept. This also applies for mains gas connections. Any facilities that utilise fossil fuels need to have a carbon monoxide monitor(s) to detect any potentially harmful gases and allow evacuation to take place in a timely manner. These need to be tested at least weekly and records kept.

Using propane cylinders indoors is an extremely dangerous practice and the repercussions can be severe. Make sure what you do is legal. Contact a gas professional if in any doubt at all.
