Hand Sanitiser: Quick Tips

If you use pump dispensers, check your hand sanitiser nozzles regularly and give them a quick wipe to remove any congealed gel – any blockage of the nozzles can cause the gel to spray out to the sides. This can end up on the floor, making it slippery, or even potentially get in people’s eyes. If this happens the high alcohol levels will cause pain at the very least!

Check you also have a safety data sheet for the sanitiser so you know what first aid measures are needed should this occur. Eye wash stations are usually recommended – do you have any in your gym?

If your dispensers are automatic, be aware an inquisitive child may go to explore where the gel is coming from and end up with an eyeful that way too, although some dispensers have a base design that prevents this.

If your dispensers are above child head height, be aware that bottom push dispensers present the same risk if the child has to reach up to press the dispensing button as their faces will be directly underneath in this instance too.

These dispensers can also leave residue on the floor from missed dispenses, which in turn can create a slippery floor and therefore an extra hazard.

Make sure you have identified such risks, controlled them where possible, and communicated them to your members where necessary, especially if you have preschool classes!!!!
