This is a fire call point key – it allows fire alarm tests to be carried out without the need to break the glass.
Weekly Fire Alarm testing is a legal requirement.
Within your Fire Safety record you should have a system to ensure all call points get tested frequently, as well as individual smoke alarms. You only need to pick one call point/detector each week but should endeavour to make sure you test all devices over time to ensure all are effective.
To help you test alarms you can get smoke alarm tester spray – specifically designed to replicate smoke in order to test these sensors. Bear in mind if you use these canisters they will need adding to your COSHH assessment too!
Fire alarm systems should also be thoroughly inspected twice a year by a competent person.
