You’re on your own, plasterboard!
Have you done any building or demolition works at your gym involving plasterboard?
How did you dispose of the waste?
Since 2009 is has been a legal requirement to segregate plasterboard waste and dispose of it separately. Plasterboard contains gypsum – a sulphate which can’t be mixed with biodegradable waste due to the potential to produce toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.
Plasterboard should therefore be segregated for recovery/recycling wherever possible. There are many plasterboard recycling companies that can deal with this waste. If sent to landfill it must be disposed of in separate cells, which not all landfill sites have. It is therefore important to monitor your waste company and also the disposal sites they use to ensure your Duty of Care in the waste management process.
The Environment Agency can fine businesses who do not deal with plasterboard in a legal manner…….the highest fine found online was £200000 for a very serious offence.
If you are any doubt of how to dispose of various waste streams, get in touch with your local waste authority, or give us a shout!
